The Dalrymple School is a smoke free building.

The Dalrymple school  was built in 1920 and is located at 46 Grovers Ave. EBCDC had this property listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Dalrymple School is affordable housing for elderly residents (62 and over), while maintaining many of the former school’s historical features. The unit mix will include 4 studio apartments and 23 one-bedroom apartments.

This newly renovated property includes replacement of all major building systems, the installation of an elevator, the re-pointing of exterior masonry and the replacement of precast stone window sills. An existing school auditorium and its historic features will be preserved as a common area for resident activities and functions.

The development will also provide service options for tenants through EBCDC’s partnerships with the Winthrop Senior Center, the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center and the Winthrop Council on Aging.

“By transforming this vacant school building into housing for senior citizens, the town of Winthrop will have a quality, affordable housing resource for many decades to come,” said MassHousing Executive Director Thomas R. Gleason.

The project is also receiving funding from HUD’s Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly Program and equity from and the sale of Historic and Low-Income Housing Tax Credits.

This property consists of 27 units for low income elderly residents.

All of the apartments will be affordable for at least 55 years.

EBCDC welcomes the opportunity to exercise care and creativity to enhance the lives of the tenants.

EBCDC has been meeting with local groups and community members regarding the Dalrymple School property. The Winthrop Service Center is  participating in programs such as story-telling, health and wellness classes, history lessons, music and dance presentations, gardening, and a foster grandparent program Volunteers from Massport will be available to accompany residents of the Dalrymple development to medical appointments, shopping, and provide companionship. EBCDC has received several calls from residents lending their time to volunteer at the Dalrymple site.  EBCDC will explore programs such as art and cultural for the enjoyment and participation of the residents.  EBCDC has been successful in recruiting several community members interested in contributing their time, experience and knowledge regarding the development of this project, and the social/recreational activities available to the tenants of the Dalrymple School.
