THE IMMIGRANTS HOME

Founded in 1881 across from the Cunard Line Pier in East Boston, the Immigrants Home provided financial relief and social services for newly-arrived immigrants.  In 1912, the organization commissioned a new five-story building at 72 Marginal Street to replace the older wood frame building they previously occupied.  This was one of several immigration relief organizations in East Boston, which also included St. Mary’s House and the Church for Sailors.

EAST BOSTON’S FIRST HOUSING FOR SENIOR CITIZENS

Founded in 1811, reconstructed in 1912, this was a refuge for immigrants landing in North America from ports in Ireland, Europe and Scandinavia.  In 1973, the home was rehabilitated and named “Landfall,” by Daniel Rossano.  It became East Boston’s first housing for senior citizens.  A number of present Landfall residents were detained here when, as immigrants, they arrived from Norway and Italy.  In 1974, the East Boston Community Development Corporation purchased Landfall.
